14 Dec Choosing The Right Shingles for Your Home
So you’re in the market for a new roof and you have no idea what kind of shingles best fit you. Have no fear! We’re here to help. Here is the Orange Elephant guide to choosing the best shingles for YOUR home. When we get asked “what shingles should I choose?” there are a few things that immediately come to mind. It would be awesome if there were just one kind of shingle that worked for every situation and every style. It would make the whole process way easier. Unfortunately, that’s just not the case.
The first thing you need to consider when choosing shingles for your home is the amount of time you plan to live there. If you plan to stay less than 20 years, you can safely get away with choosing a 20-year shingle. If you plan to stay for longer than 20 years, you should consider going with a 50-year shingle to protect your home long term.
The next thing you need to consider is wind. If you live in a location with regularly high winds, or you live in a larger, taller home, you need to consider going with architectural shingles. Architectural shingles offer better wind protection and also come in more variety of styles as an added bonus!
You should also consider hail protection and the amount of hail your area receives. Different shingles will offer different amounts of protection and if you’re on a budget it would be best to make sure you aren’t overprotecting your home.
Another thing to consider when deciding which singles are best for your home is tar strips. Shingles will vary in tar strip thickness. If you want to get the most out of your shingles, it’s important to get thicker tar strips. For those unfamiliar with what tar strips do in roofing, they are responsible for holding down shingles and are a key part in the performance and durability of your roofing system.
And now you’re finally ready to pick out some shingles for your home!
